I was wondering what the big deal is with plasma televisions?

I have a regular 27" magnavox television and I have had no problems with it, but all I keep hearing is that the plasma television is the newest thing out there and that you have to have it.

Are they better than flat screens? Do they come in flat screens? How much does a plasma television cost and is it really necessary?

I know that I will be looking for a new television within the next couple of years and would like to know if this would be a wise investment or a waste of money.
