Default Burners exceed disc speed

Does anyone know why companies have gone to market with exorbitantly priced 12x BD-R burners ahead of discs that can even function at that speed? Honestly, I have yet to see even a 6X BD-R, although I suspect they're out there. I tried searching for a 12x BD-R and cannot find one. Yet the 12x drives hit the market a year ago.
