There is this website I have been working with they are now planning to launch a mobile version of their site. The thing that I have been worrying about is the duplicate content as this mobile site will be displaying the same products with the same titles and descriptions. Would Google see the mobile formatted sites differently for the SERPs compared to the regular websites? Is it possible for a website to get penalized by Google for being a mobile formatted site with similar content? Any comments on this?

Well one way to avoid a duplicate issue altogether is by detecting the user agent (browser) that is hitting your website and presenting them a different stylesheet but the same content based on who is visiting your site. If it's a mobile browser, then you display your mobile site. If it's a normal browser or a bot you display your normal site. No separate url, no duplicate content issue at all.
