cell phones and driving
There has been recent decision about making it illegal to drive and talk on the phone. Some areas have changed the law so that it is. Other areas give cell phones to their police officers as a form of communication. There have been studies done that show that people have slower reflexes and don't see dangers when talking on their cell phone. I do a lot of driving and I talk on my cell phone when I get bored and there is nothing to listen to on the radio. I can't say that I am aware of any dangers that I have caused or on close calls on my part from not paying attention. At the same time, the people who can't chew gum and walk at the same time are also some of the same ones who are driving and taking on their cell phones. Therefore, yes I can see how this may pose a problem.

I used to live in New Jersey and it was illegal to drive while using a cell phone there. I think that it's a good law to have in effect because it saves lives. I didn't find it to be too much of an inconvenience to simply pull over if I needed to make a call.

I agree, it seems that you could just wait to make your calls until you get off the road- there are enough distractions out there without cell phones as it is.

Minnesota enacted the "can't talk while you drive" law, but it applies only to drivers 18 and under.

drive and talk
because I run a business from phone and computer----it does happen I will answer my phone while driving. I have always thought of myself as a fair driver---well seasoned------but
One day while discussing a missing package and trying to handle an unhappy customer----I was really concentrating on them----I missed my exit----well that wasn't bad---I went down--turned around took the highway back and missed it again---did the same thing and finally made the correct exit----even a headpiece would serve as a sloution for a lack of concentration!!!!!!

A point to remember is that we need to be defensive drivers as well. I try not to talk on the phone while driving because I never know when a deer or pheasant or whatever will run across the road. And I can't be certain of the driver weaving in front of me, either. Then when I pass him and get out of his way, I see the phone tucked in his shoulder and he's playing with the radio or something on the dash. Really safe driving.

I come within inches of losing my life because someone was on the phone chattering away and ran a red lite while I was crossing on the green. It scared me to death. Almost literally. I really don't think that person knew waht happened because she just kept on driving and chatting. I think it's a good law.

You know what I can't understand? You can talk to people riding in the car with you, with no problem. I notice that when people talk on the phone, they get a spaced out look in their eyes. You can see they are not paying attention. I don't think the problem is so much that one hand isn't free to drive. How many people drive with both hands? I think that when you have the phone in your hand, its like the person is sitting at home, less focused on whats going on around them. Does anyone have any ideas about that?
