Question Battery life on digital signal

Why is it that when my cell phone has a digital signal the battery lasts so much longer than it does on an analog signal?

It doesn't get into the analog areas very often, but this last fall I left home with a fully charged phone and when it has a digital signal it lasts for days. I spent the day in a valley area that only got analog reception and it was dead by early afternoon.

I think it has something to do with the analog voltage charge is more constant than a digital voltage being more discrete I think was the terminology. Anyway when I read the article I managed to understand the article.

What's the difference between analog and digital signals? I thought all phones were digital now.

When the digital signal is non-existant, my phone switches over to analog mode and for some reason it kills the battery in a hurry.
