Default Nextel walkie-talkie range

Anyone have one of those Nextel phones with the walkie-talkie? What is the range on that?

T hink the range is fairly far. If I remember correctly when I worked for a trucking company we had some drivers that had nextels and talked to their families a lot. Most of them, I think, really enjoyed that.

I do believe that the Nextel walkie talkies are nation wide. There is a button on the side of the phone that you push in for the walkie talkie mode. The minutes you use in this mode is recorded in seconds, and not in minutes like regular cell phone usage. That's the nice thing, if you talk for 15 seconds, it is only 15 seconds, not a minute. The time it takes to call someone is shorter also. They also have international plans and the talk only plans, where you don't have the regular cell phone usage ability. I think it's worth a shot.

I find it annoying when people are talking on these phones. For some reason, the person around me talking always seems to talk louder and you have the further annoyance of having to listen to the other person's response. There's enough family phone plans and free calls, if both parties have the same provider, that this feature is not needed. One of the providers, (can't remember which one), now allows you to decide who you want to add to your free call list. That person does not have to be apart of the same network that you belong to. This seems like a much nicer option to me.

That is kind of nice that they charge for seconds and not minutes- do any other phone plans do that?
