Question Turn in old cell phones

A few winters back there was a program around here to turn in old cell phones so they could be used for emergency workers and emergency purposes. How do they get those old phones all up and running on one network?

You can take your old phones or other phones to a service store, like Alltel, and they can program any phone to their service. I think for the most part do it right on th e computer. We did that about two years ago. Got to keep our phone that was originally from anothr company and evertthing. At that time we did have to switch phone numbers though.

I think I heard that you can take them to Social Services or your county offices as well and they will get them to the people who distribute them. It is a wonderful program for those who can't afford a phone and need to travel long distances to get to work. Besides, what else would we do with the old phones? It's just like our old prescription eyewear. When we go in for a checkup, we take our old ones in for distribution overseas, etc.

They also give them to domestic abuse victims and the elderly, so they can call for help from anywhere, at anytime. It's definitely a great act of charity.

Can they do this with expired pre-paid cellphones as well? I know we used to have a couple pre-paid phones we bought and don't use anymore somewhere around here.
