Default An excellent use of texting

I was just reading an article about how China warned its citizens of an impending Typhoon via a text message on mobile phones. I applaud this means of informing people of life threatening events that they should be prepared for. I for one am not a news watcher. I really just don't like hearing about all the crimes. I'm already aware of all the nightmare that people face on a day to day basis. I don't need it put in my face all the time. I told that to one of my friends, who then asked me how I would know if something like an earthquake was about to happen? My response was that when I see everyone running for their cars, I'll know something is really wrong. Also, how many of us are at work, away from any notice of danger? What do you think of this use of text messaging? You can read the article here:

For the people that have text messaging and pay attention to it, I think it's a good idea. Especially for evacuation notices and things like that. I don't think it would work well in a situation like a tornado when there are seconds to get to shelter.

Question

hmm
i think it is a good idea, so long as it doesn't lessen other forms of information.
For instance, if the news didn't talk about it as much cuz they assume people already know, or they don't feel the need to send off a siren or something amongst those lines, it may not be the best idea.
not everyone has a cell phone.
not everyone has text messaging.
It's cool to expend these options to reach as many people as possible.
The main thing I'm wondering now is:
who pays for sending out that many text messages?

You have a point.

I would think that the cell phone companies could absorb the cost in an instance like that. Radio and TV have Public Service Announcements. The phone companies can help in an emergency; it wouldn't hurt their publicity any.

Well You do get text msgs pretty fast But im not so sure I agree with it... I watch the news occasionally and I just prefer getting my warning over the radio or news.
