Sony Unveils New PS3 EyeToy
Sony unveiled its next-generation EyeToy, dubbed the PlayStation Eye, for the PlayStation 3 today.
The little beauty comes with some nice upgrades from the PS2 model, including a microphone for online voice chat and the ability to capture and save videos to the hard drive.
The new version makes "huge advances in USB camera and microphone technology [and] is set to revolutionize the experience of online communication on the PlayStation Network" says Sony.
The PlayStation Eye’s micorophone has a nifty feature - a noise-canceling microphone. This is said to reduce tertiary noise and enhance your speech when chatting to people online. This brings up an interesting point. So far, we haven't seen a united VOIP system for the PS Network, like say Xbox LIVE's chat setup. With the microphone on the PS Eye, is Sony intending on bringing such a feature, and with an ambient room mic versus a more typically configured earpiece to mouth mic set-up? Hmm.
In addition to doing normal camera duties - taking photographs, creating video or audio files for storage on the PS3's hard drive, the accessory comes bundled with software called EyeCreate that will allow editing or adding "eye-catching effects" to your snapshizzles.
The PS Eye can capture up to 120 frames per second and is set up to work in low-light, so you can keep your digs all dim and sexy and still make use of your piece of techy tech here. There's also an adjustable zoom lens, featuring a 56º field of view for closer head-and-shoulder chat, plus a 75º field of view to capture the whole body, which will be used for EyeToy-style arm-flapping games.
Sony Europe boss David Reeves said: "PlayStation Eye is a great example of how we have moved forward so significantly with our technology. PlayStation Eye has four times the resolution, twice the framerate and double the sensitivity of its predecessor the EyeToy USB Camera. With the technology that we now have at our disposal we will be able to dramatically improve the communications experience enjoyed on PS3."
