Question External flash

What is the need for an external flash when the flash that comes with my camera has three or four different settings of it's own?

Is that a digital or other camera?

It's on my digital camera, the built in flash has at least three different brightness levels plus red eye reduction- why would I need an external?

Well, when professionals use the external flash it's to get less harsh angles/shadows. You must have quite the camera, with all those settings!

You oughta check with your local camera store if they offer digital camera classes. The place I bought my Canon from offers them, and I'm signed up for one in Sept.
