Post PC World's Top five MiniDV Camcorders

PC World tested out 7 MiniDV camcorders in conjunction with Macworld its sister publication. They evaluated the quality of video captured in both normal and low-light situations, critiqued audio quality, and compared the camcorders' still images.

This unit is light and easy to use, the DCR-HC36 offers a touch-screen LCD, but 16:9 wide-aspect video is letterboxed on screen.

20X optical zoom
2.5-inch LCD screen
0.7-megapixel still-image camera (yikes!)
15 ounches
$400

Post Final Conclusion:

The writers of the review concluded that bargain hunters and videographers in need of a lightweight camcorder would do well with the Canon Elura 100 or the Sony DCR-HC36. Both cost just $400 and offer enough features for most users. This is the info that the average Joe needs to know.

These have still photo capability, but do you think their quality is as good as on a digital camera?

Thanks for the reviews - I think, based on what I'm willing to spend, that I'd go with the $400 model.

If I wanted a camera primarily for still photos, I'd purchase a still digital camera, because they specialize in that. Historically, DV's haven't taken as good of still pictures as still cameras.
