Default Using a flash in sunlight

I read something interesting about using a flash outdoors during the day. I’ve never done this because logic always dictated that the sun was the best source of lighting around. Who need a flash when the sun is shining brightly? Makes sense, right? Well as it turns out my logic is off. I just read that using a flash in sunlight will make the exposure better, by removing harsh shadows. Has anyone tried this technique and what were the results? The article said that for best results, stand 10 feet away from your subject. I’d love to know if this works

I used to work with a professional photographer - very artistic - and you're right, when he wanted to eleminiate the harsh shadows, he'd use flash.

Mostly I set my camera on auto flash. Maybe I ought to consider overriding that, playing with different effects I get.

Just thougt of one other thing: I was talking with a portrait studio the other day and if I was going to schedule outside photos of my family, he suggested the light at 6pm is best (during summer)
