Thumbs up Digital Cameras and Kids

With digital cameras getting less expensive all the time its easier to get kids involved in taking photography. One of the best things about digital cameras is the delete button. Sure you may get some nice pictures of the tops of peoples heads and such but after a little practice kids can really suprise you. My ten year old daughter likes to get the camera and take pictures of everything fom the bowl of cake batter we may be baking to the fish in the tank. The nice thing is they can see the results right away and delete the pictures they may not want. Plus it is so much cheaper than giving them a 35mm camera and then developing the pictures only to find that only a couple are worth saving. If you watch the clearance in some department stores you can get a digital camera for $10 or less at times.

I would worry too much about my children dropping and breaking the camera. I think a really inexpensive option is just buying a disposable camera for $5. They can wreck it if they want to and it wouldn't be a big loss.

Default Digital Cameras & Kids

I know exactly what you mean. We loaned our camcorder to our college aged daughter and it was dropped and broken. Those disposable cameras actually take very good pictures and it is no great loss if they are lost or broken. We sent those with our kids when their aunt took them to California with them. If they want something more expensive they need to save up and buy it themselves I think. That way maybe they will take better care of it. Wow, I have never seen a digital camera for that cheap! Do the cheap ones have decent printed pictures? My cheaper digital camera had horrible printed pictures.

The discount stores like walmart have them in the toy department and other areas. I got my daughter a batman digital camera there for $7 and it takes great pictures. She has dropped it a few times and it is alot more durable than my own camera. I have a kodak easyshare and the pictures are as nice as from camera. I like that you don't have the extra cost of developing the pictures. Alot of times she only asks for one or two pictures printed.

I'd be more careful too as kids get older. Kids are a lot more tech savvy than what we give them credit for, and places like myspace allow them to post pictures that a parent might not approve of. Like any piece of technology, digital cameras need some monitering if you give one to your kids.

We buy our grandkids the disposable cameras and then have the film developed and put on discs. But for our own use we use the digis. To keep our younger ones quiet they like to look at all of grandma's pictures stored on her camera. That's why I have them there yet and not deleted. If I need more room I can delete as I need to.

My kids practically jump on me after the picture is taken, saying "let me see. let me see!"
I agree that, if you can trust them not to drop it (which I DO NOT) kids have a fun time with a digital. I got one free with my Dell computer and that's what they use. No LCD screen to view instantly though - have to download.
