DVR--Love it
I just wanted to let everyone know that if you are looking at getting a Digital Video Recorder, it is definitely better than the old VCR.
I have all of my favorite programs set to tape whenever they are on, and I don't have to worry about forgetting to tape it.
I also don't have to worry about trying to find a blank tape to tape it on. Has this tape been used or is there something on this that I need?
You don't have to worry about it. I have up to 100 hours on mine and I can watch it whenever, skip through commercials and watch it over and over without worrying about the quality of it.
Once I am done watching it, I just erase it or delete it from my programming list and move to the next program that I want to watch.

The difference is that a TiVo is a type of DVR.

DVR--next generation
I see. I went over to my friend's house this weekend and he has basic cable, but with his cable service, they offer 50 hours on his DVR.
He said the main reason why he likes it is because he can tape his favorite team and watch the game at a later time.
Once he sits down to watch it, he can watch a three hour game in just about an hour. He just watches each play and zips right through the commercials.
Pretty nice, unless it's the Super Bowl and you WANT to watch the commercials.

Our satellite provider offers DVR service.
It's funny you would mention the Super Bowl commercials. I took a graduate class once that dedicated two days to analyzing the Super Bowl ads.

DVRs
Are DVRs a seperate box with your cable system or are they part of it. I have been considering switching to digital cable this winter ( I downgrade to basic every summer). I was wondering if you have to buy a box on your own or pay an additional monthly fee for the service. Can you really rewind the shows? I don't remember the last time I watched an entire episode of a favorite show on tv. Probably before I had children. Also if you don't have to buy your own DVR box is it cheaper in the long run to purchase or is this one of those things you want to wait for a few years until the price goes down? How easy are they to learn to use? But most importantly, as long as I have a working VCR is it worth it to get a DVR or just something that starts out exciting then drops down the ladder after a while?

We got DVR through Dish, and we paid an extra $5 a month. IT was worth every penny of that measly $5. Later we changed to Direct TV for reasons not worth explaining, and they had TiVo which basically looks like the same thing. One big difference existed though: Direct TV had two dishes up, which meant a person could watch one thing and record another at the same time. Dish did not offer that capability then. You had to watch what you were recording.

DVR - love it, too!
it's spiffy device. you can pause live TV and rewind it and it's pretty much amazing.
i have a job and school and lots of things going on usually and DVR sets to automatically record any show i like to watch (like the OC). you don't even have to set it to record every Thursday at 7... you can have it record via the name of the show and every time it plays it'll record. then you can delete it or save it... some people record it onto tape or whatever. it's pretty handy though. and you can search to see if/when certain shows are on. like if i want to see if Dinosaurs still plays or is on, i type it in and anything with the name dinosaur that's programed comes up.

Another nice thing about DVR is that you can get a "season pass" and the recorder will automatically record every episode of your favorite show. This way if your favorite show comes on at times that are not good for you, you can keep on doing whatever it is you need to do and not have to worry about missing a single moment of the show's season.
