This is a real bummer. I was hoping to get a drive for my HTPC without upgrading my video card.

25GB per disc is a pretty decent reason to me. Not going to drop $500 on one, though. By the time the price drops a bit, the video cards will be available.

That's ok because I'm not concerned about watching movies on my pc. I am, however, concerned with archiving the HD movies and shows that I've recorded by burning them onto Blu-ray.

don't really care about watching either formats on my computer, but I sure do care about the 25gb of storage.

This whole thing smells. I can already watch HD movies perfectly on my computer. Now when I want to watch Blu-Ray or HD-DVD discs I will have to get a new video card that isn't even out yet. This seems odd if it's possible to extract the actual av 'file' from the disc you shouldn't need this HDCP. But protection is probably gonna be pretty good. Whatever, I've already got most my titles in HD:-)

Not only will you have to have a new video card, but you'll also have to have Windows Vista and an HDCP compliant monitor too...

I guess Hollywood really doesn't want anyone watching their movies anymore.

I'm confused why people (especially the article in the OP) are blaming video card manufacturers. The AACS is still not finalized. As the AACS keys are encoded via hardware (meaning a firmware upgrade would be of no help), there is nothing the video card manufacturers can do.

I'm sure once the specifications are finalized, we'll see HDCP-compliant HDMI video cards.

Yuck. For those of us who use a PC as the center of their HT system, this sucks a bit. But, I can see needing to upgrade my computer by the time I care, anyway.

Saw this, thought some people out there would be happy. But then, they wil probably get sad when they see the price, which I bet will be up there. But at least a HDMI-HDCP video card is going to be released soon.
