A pinhole camera is a camera without a lens. The light producing the image passes through a small hole. In order to produce a reasonably clear image, the aperture has to be a small pinhole on the order of 0.5 mm (0.02 inches) or less. The shutter of a pinhole camera usually consists of a hand operated flap of some light-proof material to cover and uncover the pinhole. Pinhole cameras require much longer exposure times than conventional cameras because of the small aperture; typical exposure times can range from 5 seconds to hours or days.

You mostly use a pinhole camera to become familiar with the basic elements of photography. Plus it is an interesting and different way to take pictures. A smaller pinhole will give you a better picture. Although an extremely small hole will cause too much diffraction and make the picture not as clear. Pinhole cameras give you continual depth sharpness, compression of time, a very wide angle of takes, exact prospective projection, and visable and not visable (to the human eye) light spectrums (http://www.pinhole.org/).

A type of camera in which the 'lens' is simply a very small aperture, or pinhole. This camera uses the principles of straight-traveling light paths and reversibility of light paths to form images on a screen or film.

That reminded me of my old high school project. The pinhole camera can be called a "father of cameras". The entire concept of clicking a photography was sketched out through this simple physics.
