Default home theater

An audio/video entertainment center that has a large-screen TV and hi-fi system with three speakers in the front (left, right and center) and left and right speakers in the rear. Starting in the early 1990s, video inputs were added to stereo receivers and preamplifiers. Today, almost all audio vendors make combination audio/video equipment for home theater listening and viewing.

Home theaters are the way to go if you have the money to put into them, if you buy cheap then it wont sound that great.

I'm not sure I am too sold on the home theater system. It seems like a great thing if you watch a lot of movies or TV. I am not a TV person and I rarely watch movies. I have noticed though when my family watches movies with the theater system, it really doesn't sound any different. Everything is louder, that's about it. I will say for me it did make a couple scary movies even more scary. However, if anything happens to our system now, I don't think I will be buying another one. The one we have now was a gift. It serves it's purpose.

Default telling the differance.

I felt a differant tone to sound---not just louder-----but many differant distinguishable sounds. To me it was like using a headphone cheap to putting on a pair that completely cup snuggly your ears. Try one of your fav CD's---I bet you never go back to playing your music in the old cd player.

Your ideas for a theater are not conducive to a theater environment. There really is nothing like a projector and screen to give you the feelings of being in a theater. I definitely see your point. I'm just looking for another comment to convince me to lay my foot down for the projector vs. rptv.

a $300 "home entertainment center" is not going to give you any real advantages other than "making it louder" if it is not set up right. There's many different factors to getting the most out of your home theater. From speaker placement, to ensuring you're using the right kind of cables for the equipment you're using, it all has to come together. I've seen so many people get a 5.1 reciever and plug composite rca jacks into it and wonder why it doesn't sound that much better. If you are unsure of your setup, talk to someone at a local audio/video store. (not sears or walmart) or any of the big box stores, talk to the guys that only do audio.video, they know what they're talking about.
