Default Go to first new post Multiple Monitors support?

I was over at Circuit City today and was playing with a couple of the laptops.

I noticed when I went into the Display Properties under the Setting tab, it had "Multiple Monitors (then the video card name)" ...

Does that mean alot of the laptops out there today, can support a second monitor by just connecting it to the VGA port on the laptop?

I was always under the assumption that if you plug a monitor into the VGA port, the laptop's display would transfer over to the external monitor. Maybe that's no so true nowadays. Perhaps, it's just one of the options.
