Today while i was out I went to an electronics store and began looking at lap tops and desk tops. I wanted a lap top becuase they can go anywhere but yet I wanted a desk top the only problem is the guy spoke with GB,MB,MHTZ I just looked at him with a dum founded look as I am not sure what any of that means and its a foreign language for me So in lamens terms HOW DO I SHOP FOR A COMPUTER THAT IS AFFORDABLE and can handle downloads and music lots of pictures and lots of instant messeging?

Just about any new computer can handle downloads and music with lots of pictures and lots of instant messaging. I recommend looking for one with a duel-core processor -- this makes it faster than the old processors. Just about any computer will have enough memory now.

When you go shopping and the salesperson starts talking all the jargon, just tell him/her that you don't understand the technical language. Tell them what you want it to do. And ask them to explain it in simple layman terms. If they're a good salesperson, they will do it.

Yup go for dual core processor but at the same time check out for the below listed things:-
1. 80GB or 120 GB(Gigabyte) 10000rpm or 7200rpm hard disk.
2. 512 Mega Byte(MB) or 1 Giga Byte (GB) Random Access Memory(RAM).

Good advice, savvytechno. My husband taught me a few years ago that the more RAM you have, the faster your computer will process, as opposed to just looking at the processor. The three items together -- RAM, HD, and processor -- will be what makes your computer faster than an older one. Ask about warranty too -- you should get at LEAST a one-year warranty on it. Some come with more.

Just be sure to do a little research on your own before you go...if you act too dumbfounded they will see you coming and try to sell you a bunch of stuff you don't really need.

In my own opinion, Acer and HP are the best brands ever. I already owned HP and its definitely amazing and its design, features, memory and speed are excellent.
