I have been using Xandros for about 2 months now and have to say as an internet Os it is fantastic. It seems the Xandros makers have went out of their way to make an excellent internet experience.
Furthermore you dont need to bother with Spyware/Antivirus/Anti Trojan programs as they have all been designed to mess up windows and dont know what to do to a Linux machine.
Secondly the default browser is firefox. And this is not engraved into the OS like internet explorer is.
But one thing i am very suprised non of the tech experts have not mentioned. As when i was first installing all the Linux experts on the linux forums i went to put this down to important step number 1. And that is make sure you defragment your hard drive before partitioning. When they said it, it seamed logical to me as if you have a file sprawled all accross your hard drive and you split your hard drive in half. Thats the file messed up
I used the Partitioning program that came with Mandriva. And chose install to windows. It is very easy to use (one you understand what install to windows means, i.e it wont wipe windows off your machine)
I myself bought Mandriva powerpack and installed it and had problem after problem. I would recommed a debian based linux. Either Kubuntu, Unbuntu, Mepis, Libranet or Xandros. I have tried mepis, Ubuntu and Xandros and they are very nice.

I am like 99% sure swap was made for computer with little ram to take some of the place. (Sort of like virutal memory page filing I think). So that means with todays computers and the abundance of ram there is no need for swaps.
I may be way off but I think im close.

ive ordered 10 ubuntu cds cos its free so you know if mandriva doesnt work Ill take your word for it and try that out. il try to shre some of the cd's i keep telling friends and family about linux and no one belives how good it is, they think its some virus infested crappy OS some guy put together using his crappy pc in his bedroom, while it may have started out like that no one will believe that Linux no matter what version it on its way up,it just goes to show how windows is so embedded into the computer world, ppl are scared to change.

Redhat is a nice easy distribution to start away from home with. They enclose a new assignment out now, called Fedora, which I haven't experimented with, but I have Redhat 9 and I'm good-looking cheerful with it.
