10.4 vs 10.3
Hi all
Does anyone out there regret buying tiger??. Since installing tiger i have come to the conclusion that i dont need all the features that tiger gives me.
I dont use spotlight, dont have a use for it and the dashboard is never used on my machine.
Also i have had the noisy fan issue sometimes, which never happend before i upgraded.
My machine only came with 256 but i added another 512.
I am not knocking tiger, it is very stable and does not give me any problems.
I think when the next release of osx comes out i will go into one of the stores and have a play with it before deciding whether to buy or not.

I don't regret installing it but - like you - there are a lot of features that I don't use. And, of course, there's been the hassle of updating many programs that worked fine under earlier versions of X. Overall, I'd give it a B- rating.

I was on the fence about unpgrading but there are lots of apps coming out that require Tiger to work fully (iLife 06, Google Earth, Coverflow etc..) which tipped me over the edge.
I use the widgets and spotlight more than i thought i wuld but they are definatly not essential

Hopefully 10.5 will blow us all away with its new features, and heres hoping the finder gets some overhauling.
I am thinking about going back to 10.3.9 as its not so memory hungry

IMO Tiger was not really a release to buy for the new features (despite what Apple says).
It was more of a under-the-hood update, so you can use new apps that take advantage of these features.
Personally, seeing as how many apps now requite you to be running Tiger, I'm glad I've updated.
You could probably skip one update though (i.e. if you were running 10.3. you could possibly skip 10.4. and just go right to 10.5. when it comes out).

I keep hearing hardcore Mac users saying Apple needs to fix the Finder, but I never found out what exactly it is about the Finder some people think is so bad. Could you give me a summary?

It has poor behaviors.
1. Doesn't always remember the previous windowing
2. In column view when maximizing window resizing doesn't work correctly
3. Apple menu bar has issues with status icons
It's the old six of one, half dozen of the other. Everytime they (Apple) release a new feature or improvement that has a wow factor there are just as many ohh factors.

I have found the finder a bit buggy in that sometimes the icons on the sidebar seem to change all by themselves and do strange things, like re arranging in a different order to what i have set them.
Other than that i am happy with it, but i wont be suprised if apple has some radical updates and ideas for 10.5. We will just have to wait and see.
Anyone know from past releases when apple previews a new release in one of their keynotes, i think tiger was around mid 2004 if memory serves me, and released in april 2005.
Cant wait to see whats planned for the next one.
Been using a mac for almost a year now and loving it. Used to watch all the keynotes on my windows machine and drooled, thats what made me switch and reading forums like this.
