Default partitioning replacement HD for OSX panter

i'm booting off the ibook software restore disk with OSX panther on it, but it says the destination drive is unfit for installation (or something along those lines). I suspect this has something to do with how it's formatted/partitioned, but i'm not sure and i don't have any documentation about it.

a little help?
