Default PCs Objects of Desire?

I just read and article on MSN about how Microsoft has been hard at work designing new PCs that are supposed to be so captivating to the eye, that we will "fall in love with them". "We want PCs to be objects of pure desire", they state.

Many people are attached to inanimate objects like their cars. They name them and hate the idea of trading them in for something else, rather they lovingly restore them, wash and buff them and drive them proudly. Pull up the hoods and brag about the engines, detailing all of parts it has and ones they hope to someday replace, down to the ashtrays. My question is, does anyone here feel that way about their computer?

A friend of mine had difficulty deciding whether or not to replace her laptop. It was 5 years old, but was still working really well. She shopped around for over a year and bought one this past Christmas. She most definitely did not find her old computer as "an object of desire," though. She spends a lot of time on her computer, so she knew all the ins and outs of her old one. She also wasn't treasuring the idea of transferring all her files to a new computer.

I read the same article as technochick. I thought it was interesting because the article's focus was on the DESIGN of a computer. True geeks could care less how a computer looks as long as it has the more than necessary functions (it's fast and reliable). However, non-geeks, which make up the majority of computer owners, are attracted by design. At least that's what I think.

Really? I would think that a true computer geek would want the latest and greatest of everything. Of course since my expertise in these things is hitting the "on" button, what do I know? That's probably why I'm more likely to be hooked by the cool look, rather than all the programs it might contain.
