Default Wireless speed help

hi,

I have a netgear dg834g (v1) with the latest firmware. Ever since i got this about 3 years ago, the speed i get through it has been about a quarter of the speed i get when the pc is wired in the router or directly connecting using a usb modem. I thought this may be the norm.

For example connected directly i can get 3meg speed on a speed tester. through the wireless i get 700kb.

i have wpa-psk enabled but surely this doesn't slow it down by much.

Has anyone experienced this before and do you think i have a (always) broken box?

Thanks

What's the signal strength like? Are you near the wireless router? Any walls/floors in the way?

This is when i sit next to the router, unfortunately after 45 mins on the phone to Netgear's indian call centre, they told me that the router was faulty, but out of support. really helpful.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm basically getting 10% of the speed that i get if i connect directly.

Thanks

What sort of speed does it connect to the router at? 11Mbit? 54Mbit? Are you absolutely certain that you're connecting to your router? Sometimes if your neighbour has a router with a same/similar SSID you can connect to theirs by mistake.

Have you tried using no encryption for a quick test? It sounds like a very early model to support AES, and as this is a very CPU intensive cypher it may be slowing down the router.

definitely my router, different ssid from standard, different ip address, wpa-psk encryption. The connection is a 54mb one.

I`ve tried different channels and with no encryption. The speed doesn`t change

Thanks for your help
