Need help or info on setting up a large home network
I'm interested in learning about and setting up what sounds like a large and complicated home network. I have about 7 computers with wired network cards, 2 wireless, a couple printers, and would like to leave room for expansion for a few more. I also have 1 server I would like in teh mix mostly for data storage and possibly more. I have a number of wired and wireless routers, switches and hubs, but think I'll pass on the hubs. I have a single cable broadband connection to share this all with. Currently I have the modem plugged into a larger router that is hooked up to a handfull of computers, the server, and another router. the 2nd router has dhcp disabled and has a couple computers plugged into it and also has wireless. All my computers run win2k or winxp with 1 running win98 and the server currently using a limited use win2k3 server beta/development system, but also have win2k server available. I have a couple of print server cards available for the printers. All of this runs on 100mbs ethernet cable and works somewhat the way it is, but I have problems with routing games and some issues with serving games mostly via internet, but a few on the lan. I don't know too much about networking but have set up what I have on my own and am willing and wanting to learn more. I can't find many guides detailing how to integrate a server into a lan, just guides for small home networks without one. One thing I am also having trouble with is finding info on how to connect to other small lans with or without the server at other distant locations via the internet. I am hoping for some links to guides or some helpful guidance from the forum. I know this is a hefty project but am willing to do what it takes to get this set up and learn hands-on about networking. Thanks in advance for all the assistance.
