Default Switch set up

Some of it is discussed in ( hub & switch ) thread below but to keep my question seperate here it is.

Small network 7 pc's all wired to a switch which is downstairs , the pc's are 2 upstairs 5 down . Company wants ASDL modem /router connected to the server pc upstairs . What is the best option for the other pc's to get connected other than wireless.

Just connect the router/modem to the switch and make sure all of the PCs are configured to use the IP of the router/modem as the default gateway.

Erik sorry to bother you again , there was no previous internet access on these pc's , the modem/router will give me the firewall , what would the best option be for the anti virus set up , will I need to run it on all pc's ?

You should be running anti-virus software on all PCs, otherwise it is pretty pointless. There are some good free solutions like AVG and Avast! if that is what you are looking for. Kepersky and Nod32 anre considered some of the best pay versions.

The most important thing is that it is up to date, I would take a less effective updated version over the best out of date one any day.

Are these SERVER servers running a server os or is it a Peer to peer network with one PC acting as a server. If you have a server OS and it is a DHCP server and the router also acts as DHCP server, you will have problems. If you have a server OS, you could set it up to be a proxy and have it connect that way. Not enough info at present to give you an informed opinion.

Its peer to peer with one pc acting as the server with minimal security , so as Eric in the above post says will need to put up anti virus on all pc,s thanks for the help lads.

Your WAN and LAN addresses are not really related. You can have any combination of static and dynamic that works for your needs. Basically the router will keep both addresses in its configuration and route packets between them.

You might need to reconfigure the router with the new static address you are given though, really depends on how your ISP and router work. I would probably hard code the static address just to be on the safe side anyway.
