Default I can't set up LAN!

Hi All,
I'm new to setting Local Area Networking. It is the first time I have to connect My laptop to my desktop. I wish to share ADSL internet and files via lan. I've installed INTEX RTL 8139D LAN CARD in my desk and in the leptop is installed the same (at least I see the same in DEVICE MENAGER of the laptop).
On both computers OS is Windows XP. Both lan cards show now error. When I connect them with wire nothing happens, they don't detect each other.
Please tell me what should I do ? What might the problem?

Unless your ADSL modem is also a router, this setup will not work. So let's go back to the beginning.

Is your DSL modem internal or external?

What type of DSL service do you have? Is it PPPoE?

How far apart ar the PC's?

Post back and I will guide you through the steps neede to get this hooked up.

dsl modem is external.
As for dsl service I don't know what type it is, but it is like local area network, the internet provider told me that l'm part of their network, like I'm connected into their big LAN.

But I think this is not the case.
I wish to set up LAN for general purposes, I wish to share not only ADSL internet but also dial up internet and also shere files and so on.
Do you think it is a big problem?

This is a bulletin board, not a chatroom.

XP Home or XP Pro?

rigth click my computer and select properties. On the tab called "Computer Name" make sure that the workgroup is the same on all PC's and that should help U.

finally I found out that the wire was cut and this was the reason for not setting the LAN. Now I set the LAN and I can see on the both computers that the LAN is working and both computers are connected. The problem is that the computers don't see each other. I shared the whole hard disks on both computers, but each computer sees only itself. So I still can't share files. Can you tell me what is the problem this time? In advance thank you for support.

I personally use Sygate. It is easy to set up the network so it's seamless.

Any of them will work. The key, and this goes for whichever you use, is that you need to setup the firewall properly. This means telling it that traffic on your interneal network shouldn't be filtered out like all of the other random traffic hitting the computers.

Also unless you have a router or ICS setup this setup will never work to share the internet connection. Sharing files should work fine once the computers are in the same workgroup, and setup to allow file and printer sharing.
