Default Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

Did anyone play "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" as a kid? This is another '80s educational game that was played on Apple II. I know the original game has spawned television shows and more games, like "Where in the USA?", "Where in Europe?", and "Where in Space is Carmen Sandiego?".

Does anyone have a favorite of these? I can't help but prefer the original version, since it brings back memories of childhood. Although I can't say I am that great at geography now as an adult. I guess the game wasn't that wonderful in terms of helping me retain world facts.

Smile Where in the world

I played that game when I was young. It was alot of fun. I also think the original was the best. It also did not help my geography as an adult, but it did help when I was younger. I really did not have any interest in geography, so I am sure that is part of the reason that I have really not kept up on it. That game was helpful and fun back then.

Although I am not into geography, the game may have helped my knowledge of historical facts. I went on to major in History in college.

The carmen sandiego series was the best! I spent hours on these games. Where In The World....was my favorite. I think they are an excellent way to teach kids geography and history.

Thanks for bringing it up...I had forgotten about it.

Default A bit of history

Carmen Sandiego was originally conceived in 1983 by ex-Disney artist Gene Portwood, Mark Iscaro, Ed Guarnieri, Dane Bingham, and Lauren Elliott at Brøderbund Software. The concept for the product evolved from a game the Carlstons (founders of Brøderbund) played as kids, using the world almanac and maps to play quiz games. To inspire kids to learn geography, the creators wanted a female "heroine" whose name sounded exotic but was unmistakably simple to pronounce. The name "Carmen Sandiego" is somewhat of a play on Indiana Jones.

Thank you for the history lesson. The creators' use of the name Carmen Sandiego was very original...it has a musical quality and sounds international as well.
