I'm not that big into HL. I bought HL2 to play deathmatch because I wanted a good online multiplayer and I must say it was awesome. Is it worth it going back and getting the previous games for HL and playing through and getting up to speed?

I hope now everyone can see how episodes can really help a game based of a engine that evolves in a way such as Source. If it were released as a full game, we may never have seen such great effects until the next game or another game that licensed the engine.

Well if you have HL2, you should already have access to HL1 via steam. If not then they are well worth the purchase (either on steam or in store). I recommend getting Blue Shift too. That way you have HL1, Opposing Force (it comes with Blue Shift), Blue Shift itself and more importantly the High Def pack.
The Marine AI is still the best Squad AI I have encountered in any FPS ever.

I started with HL2 with Fakefactory's texture pack. Yes, I know everyone says Half-Life was a classic that everyone should play, but I just can't stand seeing horrible graphics on my computer Hopefully Black Mesa: Source turns out well and I can play that instead
