SS2 - Do You Think It's Scary?
Well, I've finally gotten around to playing (with the intention of completing) System Shock 2.
Now, I understand a ton of gamers regard this as THE scariest game ever. And I just don't get it.
All the things that scare most people don't even seem to phase me. I don't understand. Normally a game like SS2 would scare me easily, but theres just something about it...
For instance, I'll be walking down a hallway, dark, seemingly deserted, and I hear a moan coming from the far end of the hall. I keep going, and decide to turn around to check my back a little farther up the hall and BAM! A hybrid right in the face. This doesn't scare me at all. In a conversation with Vagabond, according to him, this is one of the scariest aspects of the game.
However, I think I know why this doesn't scare me. My mistake - I played and beat Doom 3 before I started playing System Shock 2. In Doom 3, there were plenty of times when an Imp would sneak up behind me, and I would turn around, be somewhat startled, blast it to a pulp, and continue on my merry way. By the end of Doom 3, I had gotten so used to being flanked from behind by enemies this didn't seem to even startle me anymore.
When I play System Shock 2, and a hybrid sneaks up behind me, it doesn't scare me. SHODAN doesn't scare me. The mid-wives do not scare me. The annelid eggs do not scare me. Hell, not even the Cyborg Assasins scare me.
So, to wrap up, do you find System Shock 2 scary, and if so, what is the major aspect that scared you most? Am I about to be shunned by PC Gamers everywhere because I am alone on this? (And, if you haven't played System Shock 2, you can always aquire it off eBay, or if you're smart enough, you will find it elsewhere *wink*).
