GPS for emergency use
GPS are a great tool. I know several people who have them for personal use but they are also great for fire departments, ambulance, weather spotters, and so many more. I see them used often on emergency scenes in which a helicopter is needed to get to a certain location for a patient. If the fire department or emergency management has a GPS, they can lock in the exact location and report it to the pilots in the helicopter. The chopper can then fly to the spot without having to fly around waiting to see emergency lights on the tops of firetrucks. We use it when we are out boating. We lock in some of our favorite places on different lakes so we can return easily to them or have friends come out to meet us. As for hikers and that, it is a great tool (especially if your not good at using a compass like me).
