Powerful reception for gps
I went on a backpacking trip in the Bighorns last year and found that my handheld gps had trouble keeping up reception wise once we got high into the mountains. Are these like cellphones- where you get behind a mountain or some other thing that restricts reception and they suffer or are there some hand held gps units that have great reception in places like this?

That's a little frightening -- I would think that a person should be able to get reception just about anywhere. What's the use of them then?

Well, you figure it runs off a satellite and I suppose there are places even a satellite can't signal into very well.

Check out this site: www.garmin.com
These guys are one of the leading makers of GPS devices. My husband used one of their cheaper units when he was in Iraq, and it worked very well for him.

If the alternative is getting lost in the mountains, I'd pay the $200.

Well thankfully we didn't get lost, but it sure would be nice to have a unit that would work in all places.

Can't satellites be positioned to cover those areas so that a gps can do what it's supposed to do? Or is this something that I'm not totally understanding?
