Default Apple wins Time's gadget of the week

Time's gadget of the week is Nike's iPod connectivity kit.

Apple wins Time Gadget of the Week, again.

We aren't sure whether Time Magazine gives out little commemorative plaques with each Gadget of the Week but if they do we're pretty sure The Steve has begun using them for coasters and handing them out at the company Christmas party. Once again Apple has won the Time Gadget of the Week award, this time with Nike for the Nike/iPod kit that became available last week.

For a field already glutted with gadgets, the Nike + iPod kit is the most elegant of high-tech runner's aids. An instrument the size of a pebble measures your pace from a pocket inside one of Nike's specially designed shoes. The pebble streams data to a computer that keeps time and calculates caloric burn. Instead of making you buy a whole new computerized accessory, Nike and Apple decided to use a computer you may already own, an iPod nano.

Personally the whole pebble in the shoe analogy doesn't make me want to buy the product, but to each their own. The article, which reads a bit more like an advertisement than some sort of award ceremony is approximately the 6,000th consecutive Apple product to grace Time. Perhaps a more appropriate name would be the "Apple Gadget of The Week."

It seems that regardless of the product, Time is there with their award. It's almost as if the magazine has some sort of school yard crush on the computer company. If Apple released an inanimate carbon rod it would no doubt win the magazines employee of the month Gadget of the Week award. At what point does this stop being an honor and start being ridiculous? Would Ted Williams' number 9 look so special on the Fenway facade if Carlos Quintana's 18 were adorned next to it?

Is it really important to pay lots of money for a pebble in your shoe to do the same thing you can probably guess at and be fairly accurate?
