Smile Plasma lasting long term?

I have heard alot of people say that the plasma screens don't have a very long life. They have bought new ones and they stop working within a couple years. This compared to the traditional tv's is does not seem to be a very good option. Have you heard this or had any experience with this?

Plasmas, by design, do have a relatively very short lifetime (often 5-7 years under normal operating conditions).

Wow I heard it was 5-7 years of continuous use which for most of america would be you might be able to extend that life for like 10 years as we watch WAY TOO MUCH TV but eh oh well its fun especially on a Plasma....wooohooo.

So I am curious where you got your stats on the 5-7 years under normal usage.

Thanks

That's an interesting observation. Americans watch a great deal of TV so "normal usage" is a relative term. Most people have the TV on whenever they're home, even if it's just serving as background noise.

A TV repairman told me recently that plasma tvs have a relatively short life-span for the amount of money that they cost. I'd like to get a new generation tv but can't justify the cost.

I agree. I even know some people who leave the tv on when they're not home, so their pets can listen to it.

Default plasmas and video games

I know when big screen tvs first started coming out, like a bizillion years ago (LOL!!!), manufacturers said that you shouldn't play playstation, etc. on them because the images would burn into the screen.

What about plasmas? Are they designed to be used with game consoles?

Good question...and as far as playstation burning an image into the screen--well I remember hearing that,too...but it never happened to me and I don't know anyone that had it happen...I've also heard that its better to leave the tv on because turning it off and on is what causes components to fail.I wonder if that's true...

I really have not heard a lot of positive statements regarding plasma tv. I'm not sure I could afford to buy a tv only to have it go out in a few years. But I'm sure not everybody's budget is as tight as mine is either. I'm just interested in getting a flat panel tv to make more room in my living room.

Yes indeed...more room in the living room would be great. Maybe the price will come down as more and more people get the new generation tvs.
