Default what's the difference between a plasma TV and a regular TV?

I was wondering what the big deal is with plasma televisions?

I have a regular 27" magnavox television and I have had no problems with it, but all I keep hearing is that the plasma television is the newest thing out there and that you have to have it.

Are they better than flat screens? Do they come in flat screens? How much does a plasma television cost and is it really necessary?

I know that I will be looking for a new television within the next couple of years and would like to know if this would be a wise investment or a waste of money.

The big difference is the picture! I'm not sure of the picture difference between plasma and LCD... but I do know that either one of them is much better than our regular CRT televisions.

Plasmas nor LCDs outperform CRTs. Plasma uses flourescent lights to create the picture, while CRTs use cathode ray tubes to draw an image on teh screen.

Default Color Television History

A German patent in 1904 contained the earliest recorded proposal for a color television system. In 1925, Zworykin filed a patent disclosure for an all-electronic colour television system. Both of these systems were not successful, however, they were the first for color television. A successful color television system began commercial broadcasting, first authorized by the FCC on December 17, 1953 based on a system designed by RCA. Between 1946 and 1950 the research staff of RCA Laboratories invented the world’s first electronic, monochrome compatible, color television system. - From IEEE Milestone Plaque.

Did these first color televisions use technicolor? I know that movies of that era used technicolor but I don't know if that technology was also used in television.

I have also heard that plasma televisions don't last very long either. Aren't they more expensive than lcds? Wouldn't you consider buying a plasma tv a waste of money then?
