Default Could Somebody Explain?

I'm confused at what a receiver does? Can't you just buy a stereo and hook it up. What do you need a receiver for and how does it make your entertainment system better?

The reciever is what you plug your components into. It decodes the signal (if necessary), amplifies, then outputs to the speakers.

I just learned something new today. Thanks so much for putting your explanation in layperson's terms. I'm not so gifted in technology stuff, but I still have a great curiosity on how things work.

I had no idea that that's what a receiver is. Thanks for the info.

A receiver (electronics) is a combination of a radio broadcast tuner and an amplifier for the speakers, as well as selection for sources such as a CD or tape, and adjustments for audio, such as a graphic equalizer or basic tone controls.
