Default Should I change hardware?

As I wanted to scan my 35mm slides & negs to disc I bought an Epson filmscan 200 but that was some time ago & for one reason or another never got around to using it. The problem now is that I have upgraded my computer & changed to XP & Epson do not have drivers for this setup so the only way I have been able to get it to work is with Vuescan.I have to admit to being a complete novice when it come to scanning so I need a setup that is as user friendly as poss.On the couple of times I have tried to use my present kit the results have been quite poor quality & slow but I would still like to be able to put the images onto disc.I have an Epson Expression 1600 flatbed which is on SCSI with the filmscan 200 so I am wondering should I sell both scanners that I have & get a 4990 or just swap the filmscan 200 for a 4990 or persevere with the present setup given my lack of knowledge & the problems with speed & software.Any advice would be most welcome.
