Default Scanning Uncommon Format Transparencies

I am about to purchase a scanner for images and transparencies. The reading of the various and excellent reviews seems to lead me to one of the two latest flat bed scanners: EPSON 4990 or CANON 9950.

Here is my question: I will scan as well as regular 135, 120 and 4'x5' transparencies and negs, a large number of B/W 127 negs (4x4cm) and ancient 8x12cm (approx) glass plate negs.
Do I need some kind of negative holder, or can the negs be placed flat on the glas ? Which of the two machines in your opinion is the most suitable for this kind of work ?

I would better suggest you to search it on 'Google' coz it will provide you with list of comprehensive results.
