Default Tearing a speaker apart

When I was a kid, our neighbor boys would take things apart -- anything from frogs to old speakers. I can remember they were most fascinated by the cylindrical magnet found in every speaker.

Why does a speaker need a magnet? Anyone know what makes this a necessary component?

I guess since it is a electrical device it uses the input to magnetize something else back and forth to cause the speaker to vibrate making the sound.

Ya, the magnets on the car subwoofers were massive....I can see where a young kid would be fascinated with them!!!

I am not sure... But of course kids are going to be happy with anything big and not a toy.

That's so true. I'm still amazed by those neighbor kids. They didn't have much for toys. Their parents were (poor) farmers just like ours, yet we would entertain ourselves for hours outside playing in the tree groves and building forts with dead branches. Our imaginations made some great memories for us.

There were magnets in the cows' stomachs? What were your farmers feeding their cattle?
