Are VHS's Dead?
Are VHS's Dead? That is what I was wondering when I was looking at buying movies online. I have seen gobs of people trying to unload their old movies that they have re-purchased on DVD and I was wondering if VHS was dead or not?
I mean other than security systems that might want to switch over to DVD's here soon even though the VHS's might be a little more cost effective I don't see the need for VHS anymore?
Why would someone get a VHS when DVD's are becoming more and more affordable all the time?
So, is security the only place left for VHS tapes or will there be another use for them in the near future?
Let me know what you think VHS DEAD OR NOT?

VHS is most definitely dead. Unlike the difference between DVD and HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, the difference between VHS and DVD is huge. Not to mention the convenience factor.

VHS movies are so cheap
You can go almost anywhere. You can find them online. You can find them in stores or at garage sales and they are selling them for coins instead of dollars. I think that may keep them around for awhile longer.
The fact that they don't scratch easy and are a little more durable may also keep them around for awhile. Now that kids are have VCR's and DVD's in their rooms, even the small children. VHS is much more durable for them.

Silly Human Behavior
Aahhhhh…. There are so many fronts to this subject; I don’t even know where to begin. First off it is a shame that the world loves to keep ancient items around the house and implement them into every fabric of their daily existence. “Oh, but their antiques” they say. Ha!! VHS will be around for a very long time. Why, because we as humans have the need to spend less money on less product. Now that I’ve raved how dumb we are, I probably shouldn’t tell you of the beautiful, “brand new” record player I just bought. So if I know it is dumb why do I buy it? Well, to error is human.

I agree that VHS might be more durable for small children. My children have scratched DVDs and CDs. So I think it's okay to buy VHS for children's videos. As someone else stated, you can buy them at any garage sale or resale shop.

How are VHS more durable? My DVDs don't get worn out by simply watching them, as is the case with VHS.

I think VHS is more durable for very small children. My children are very young and tend to stick DVDs anywhere they see a slot, and have managed to scratch many. With a VHS, they would have to be left unattended for quite a while to start taking the tape out.

Another thought on this is that there are several old movies and familiy gatherings that I have on VHS that I probably wouldn't spend the extra dollars on, but still enjoy watching once in a while. There are some of the old one hit wonders that are fun to watch for the sake of the movie. They will probably never be rereleased in DVD form, so I will be keeping my VHS system for now. Who knows, maybe they will be like the vinyls in music. I still have my old 33's and listen to them as well.

Even with old home movies, it's probably a good idea to convert them to DVD so that they are preserved longer. Remember the old home movie projectors? Now that's an ancient artifact!

VHS is definitely a dead medium. I saw CVS Pharmacy selling 3 VHS tapes for $10 the other day. They were recent movies, too.
