I've used it recently myself several times just to try it out and the quality wasn't too bad - similar to many of my good experiences with skype calls. I haven't used it exhaustively enough to say that it has consistently high call quality just yet though.
There is one thing that spooks me though. This of course could be happening anywhere with any service, not just with Google Talk but notice in this article it states clearly that this Google engineer checked up on peoples Google Talk call logs.

I've never heard any news that google did or didn't log google talk conversations until this but that's a definite yes.
I know my calls could be intercepted and recorded on any system but as much as I like google I have to wonder from this how long do they keep my call logs and why? Are they going to index everyone's phone calls forever? That's a lot of data storage. Of course this is google we're talking about. They certainly could come up with the storage to do something like that.
Sometimes it just seems a bit creepy to me
